- • Chronic infection with the liver fluke Clonorchis sinensis, which is prevalent in parts of Southeast Asia. People
- may become infected with this parasite by eating raw or pickled freshwater fish from this region. Most people
- with this infection do not develop cancer, however.
- • People with chronic ulcerative colitis have a higher incidence of both benign inflammatory processes of the bile
- ducts (sclerosing cholangitis) and bile duct cancer.
- • People with congenital abnormalities of the bile ducts (choledochal cysts) are more likely to develop
- bile duct cancer.
